Mittaphab (Friendship) Hospital is one of Vientiane Capital’s principal public health facilities. To address growing demand and bring clinical standards up to modern requirements, a major modernization and extension programme was undertaken with a total project value of EUR 60 million, co-financed by Austrian, Czech, and Slovak UniCredit Banks. The civil construction component — valued at US$12.5 million (excluding MEP) — involved the construction of a new 300-bed hospital ward across three four-storey wings connected by two three-storey link buildings, together with a VIP building, a services and technical building, approximately 17,640 m² of clinical floor space, and 14,100 m² of landscaped external works including parking, footpaths, and green areas. The expanded hospital was designed to offer a significantly broader range of specialist services, including ophthalmology, physiotherapy, angiography, and obstetrics, supported by high-quality European medical equipment and staff trained in neighbouring countries and Europe.

LCG was engaged as lead architect and civil engineer to VAMED Engineering GmbH, the Austrian project management contractor appointed by the Ministry of Health. Working from VAMED’s conceptual design and in co-operation with the Mittaphab Hospital Authority, LCG was responsible for the full design development phase (May 2015–June 2016), including architectural, structural, and civil detailed design, preparation of construction documents for building permit, and tendering support including contractor selection. In the second phase (January 2016–June 2017), LCG mobilized a team of resident engineers and inspectors to carry out construction supervision of all civil and structural works through to completion.

LCG’s end-to-end contribution — from detailed design through to construction supervision — helped deliver one of the most significant healthcare infrastructure investments in Vientiane Capital. The expanded Mittaphab Hospital now provides the people of the capital with access to a substantially larger, better-equipped, and clinically capable public facility, marking a meaningful step forward in the quality and breadth of healthcare available in Laos.
